Glitter and Gold and Handmade Trees

This week I bring you something a little different than my usual stye of plentiful embellishments and carefully constructed color palettes. The photos themselves are a little different too. My husband wanted to take some photos where he could experiment with using back light. We went out to some hills behind our house at sunset and he shot these photos. I like how the light catches my transparent kimono while my face is in silhouette. 

I used scrapbook paper by Recollections in Blue Ombre Canvas and used a colorful piece of paper by Fern Martin as a mat. The photos were matted on variegated orange paper from Paper Studio's BeaHUEtiful stack and then edged with Lumiere acrylic paint in Sunset Gold.  To create the tree branches, I hand drew and cut them from a piece of wood grain paper from Paper Studios' Dendrology stack. I used 2 sizes of leaf craft punches from Recollections and raided my stash of paper scraps to create the leaves. The titles is a sticker from Stickabilities Inspirational Quotes.

This page was done for Creative Embellishment's August challenge. I absolutely love this oil painting by Leonid Afremov. I was really drawn to all the colors and used them as a basis for the color palette of my own page. I used blue as the primary color just like in the painting and layered other colors on top of it. I maintained the tree motif and incorporated the colorful leaves into my own page as well.

Pink And Girly!

Hi scrappers. I bring you a page that seems better suited for Valentine's Day than for summer. This photo was taken outside B Sweet Bakery in West LA, an eatery known for their Ube (purple yam) flavored baked goods. If you're every in the neighborhood, I recommend checking them out! 

Most of my pages start with a color scheme and a sketch. Apart from that, I don't really have  plan. I didn't expect this page to turn out so...pink. The butterfly and rose embellishments by My Mind's Eye made this page extra girly. The pink wood grain paper from My Mind's Eye's Bramble Rose stack  made for even more pink. The white floral paper is from Colorbok's Tracy Porter paper collection and is something that's been in my stash for probably over a decade.  forgot I had it!

This color scheme was inspired by Color, Story, Inspiration's July challenge. While their inspo photos were quite summery, that didn't seem to translate to my page.

Love & Aloha

A Color Story In Red, Yellow And Green

Hi scrappers! I bring you another project, this one with bold blocks of color and a summery feel. These photos were taken on Hawaii's North Shore at sunset. The pineapple patterned paper from Authentique's Utopia stack is a perfect nod to the photo's location. I used a Marvy Uchida punch to cut out hearts.

I love the red paper from American Craft's Wildflower stack that I chose as a background. The text describing adventure and beauty seemed like a good fit for my outdoorsy photos. I used a subtle green print from Paper Studio's Entirely Textures stack so it wouldn't compete with the red paper. Solid and patterned yellow scraps separate and offset the red and green.

This page was done for the challenge at Color My Heart. Their rules state I can only use the three colors provided plus black and white if desired. I really had to raid my stash looking for embellishments that fit the criteria. All of my Hawaiian themed items all had other colors besides the three needed. As a result, odd items like keys and buttons made the cut instead. As an added bonus, I noticed the colors for this challenge match the colors in my husband's shirt!

Scrap Our Stash was hosting another Blend-A-Sketch challenge. These are so fun and give lots of leeway for creating a fun and unique sketch. I wanted to keep the heart motif from the sketch on the right and wanted to reposition the photos to show as much of the wording on the red paper as possible. I really like the result!

Dream As If You'll Live Forever

Breezy Beachy Bits And Bobs

Hi scrappers! I bring your anther summer-inspired page. This one includes some found objects from the beach like sea glass and tiny shells. The photos were taken by my husband in Laguna Beach a few months back and I had just gotten this romper with a train/cape thing. I felt so fancy wearing it!   

I started with a white and mustard geometric print paper from Heidi Swapp and mounted it on black cardstock. I used book print paper from Recollections and stippled acrylic paid in tan black and gold around the edges. I recently purchased several packs of Junk Journal Goodies by Seven Gypsies and the way they are packaged makes it hard to tell what is actually included. Opening them up was like opening a surprise present. It turns out there were some great nautical pieces, one being the blue and white striped compass piece I used. There were also some assorted burlap pieces which I cut up to add some texture to my page. I used E6000 to glue on my buttons, glass bits, and tear drop embellishments by The Robin's Nest. A few silk flowers and bronzed brads complete the look.

This page was created for the More Than Words July challenge. The prompt was to draw inspiration from the words "beach" and "seashells." The results are pretty self explanatory. I also took inspiration from the color palette, including a black mat around the edges.

This layout was done for the July challenge at The ScrapRoom. I actually had photos matching the same dimensions as the layout, but I left out a lot of the geometric shapes to focus more on the embellishments.

Plums And Blues At The Beach

Guys. Can I just say it’s 97 degrees in Orange County right now and it was 110 yesterday! To distract myself from it being possibly the hottest summer on record, I’m posting another page I put together for a scrapbook challenge.

Summer is here with a vengeance and the page I bring you definitely fits he mood. This photo was taken during our latest trip to Hawaii last April. The waters of Waikiki are crystal clear and made the perfect backdrop for a selfie.

I started with purple patterned paper (sat that 3 times fast) from my new Violet Leaf Stack by DCWV. Side note: have any of you fellow scrappers heard of a store called Tuesday Morning? I just discovered one in my neighborhood and their scrapbooking section is unreal! I found embellishments, adhesives, paper stacks etc. all for seriously reduced prices. The Violet Leaf stack was $7! Most paper stacks a Michael's or Hobby Lobby are double that! I totally recommend checking out your local Tuesday Morning for fabulous scrapper finds!

I love going through my paper scrap drawer and finding pieces cut into odd shapes or have an edge that is torn or cut with fancy scissors. Sometimes I can use those as design elements that add unexpected interest.

This page was done for Lasting Memories July challenge whose theme was “selfies.” I just printed a new stack of photos to scrap and it was one of the only selfies in there!

This Design Seeds template was the inspiration for this page’s color scheme. The blues obviously complement the water colors in the photo and the purples match my lipstick. Making the background purple provided greater contrast for all the blues in the photo, really making it pop!

The layout for this page comes from ­­­­Let’s Get Sketchy’s July challenge. I altered it t fit my vertical photo instead of a horizontal one. I like the triangles in the corners of the page and feel they help frame my photo.

Scrapping In Black And White

My internet has been really spotty lately so I'll try and get this post up quickly before it goes down again!

Last summer my husband and I went to Yosemite so he could shoot a wedding. While we were there, he snapped this photo of me with the iconic Half Dome in the background.

I had a lot of fun raiding my stash for black or white items to use. I started with basic white cardstock and layered on paper scraps, paper doilies and matching strips of plaid ribbon. Paper from DCWV's Black an White prints paper stack made the perfect photo mat. It's a stack I almost never use because of the lack of color, but in this case it was just what I needed!

This was my first time ever participating in a challenge from White Plus 1, but a really loved how my page turned out! The color to pair with white for the month of June is black (or maybe a really dark gray?) an I love the contrast between the two. I will definitely be checking in to do another one of their challenges soon!

The layout this month comes from Let's Get Sketchy's June challenge. It was a perfect sketch to feature the single large photo I had and gave lots of inspiration as to how to embellish my page.

Summer is here and I have a the perfect beachy themed paged to share. This photo was a selfie taken on the balcony of a place in Hawaii where we were staying. You can't tell from the photo, but the view was gorgeous!

Once again, the perfect background paper comes from Craft Smith's Summer Dream stack. I used a piece of dark green cardstock from DCWV's All Chalked Up stacked as a photo mat, and further decorated the page with colored paper doillies.

This page was inspired by the lovely mood bard for Off the Rails Scrapbooking June challenge. I really loves the tones in the blue and green hair and made that my primary color palette. I raided my stash for beach and summer themed embellishments that also fit with the mood board.

I have used Sketch 327 from Sketches in Thyme for this layout. While this sketch was set up for 3 photos, I only had 1, and filled the extra space with matted scrap paper and embellishments.

Cosmic Love

Stickers, Stars And Sparkles

I feel like my posts are getting farther and farther apart! There's just not enough hours in the day to get scrapping in regularly! Does anybody else feel like that?

This particular picture was taken several years ago in Big Sur, California. It was incredibly dark with no surrounding light pollution since there was the ocean in front of us and mountains behind us. My husband set up his camera on a tripod and snapped this photo of us together.

I searched through my paper collected and found the absolute perfect piece in Craft Smith's Summer Dream paper pad. This paper stack has some highly specialized papers and a lot of times they just aren't right for the page I'm working on, but when they are, it's magic! I love the bokeh sparkles that continue the starry theme. I used basic black cardstock to create an asymmetrical matte and then raided my scrap drawer for some pieces big enough to mat my 5 X 7 photo. 

Some vellum scraps became the perfect embellishment and they really popped against the dark background. However, they presented the problem of how to adhere them since any adhesive used would be visible through the transparent paper. For the scraps not partially covered by the opaque photo, I used a variety of vellum stickers, brads buttons and other embellishments to tack them in place. I scattered a few more mauve brads around to tie the page together.

This page was created for the Scrap Our Stash May challenge. This was my first time creating a Blend-a-Sketch page but it was a lot of fun. I used the rectangular embellishments from one and the asymmetrical mats and parenthesis form the other.

I often look for color palette inspiration on Design Seeds an this page was no exception. I like the combination of cool blues and purples and warm pinks that match tones in the Milky Way photo.

I usually don't make many double page layouts and I must admit, I didn't initially intend to with this one either. However, I couldn't get both photos arranged in a way that I liked and ended up splitting this into two pages. Sometimes when making two page layouts, I will complete one page at a time, but this time I worked on both siultaneously.

I started with some kraft colored card stock from the Affinity stack by Paper Studio. I used some animal print paper from the Tattered and Worn stack and then used paper doilies and tags made with an Uchida tag punch. I love this punch and feel like I use it on almost every layout!

I embellished with wood buttons by Shimelle, some cat-themed die cuts by Photo Play and a sticker from Paper Studio's Cat Sayings sheet. I spelled out the names of my kitties with some American Crafts Chipboard stickers.

This page was done for ARTastic Challenge's March challenge which featured this illustration by Luka Va. The challenge was simply "animals" and left it open to interpretation. I used the picture as inspiration for the color palette and featured my two favorite animals on the layout!

Plaid And Flags

Do you ever find yourself using a certain element in your layouts over and over because you just love how they look? For me it's strings of pennant flags. I love how they look and there's something meditative in measuring, cutting and arranging lots of little triangles. Plus, it's a great way to using up little paper scraps! This is the first time I have used them in a circle though! Tip: put down a bowl or a plate and arrange your circular elements around it for a perfect circle!

I started with basic white card stock and and since the challenge called for paid, I raided my entire collect looking for anything plaid. It just so happened that both plaid papers were from Recollections Regent Street paper pad and bother patterns matched the color palette for the challenge.

I embellished with some matching scraps from my paper stash, some wooden buttons by Prima Marketing, chipboard cutouts from Cottage Farms' Pink Paislee collecton, and some MAMBI puffy stickers. I used a hashtag sticker by Little B for the appropriate "selfie" subtitle.

I used Stuck?! Sketches March layout for this page. I knew I didn't want to cut paper circles to fulfill the challenge, because no matter how carefully I cut, my circles are never perfect. Instead I decided to combine an element from another challenge and framed the photo with a string of pennant flags.

This page was also done for Color, Story, Inspiration's 249th case file. Beside matching the color scheme, I used the following suggested elements:

I used Mini MAMBI Banners as a sign to journal in, and The Paper Studio's Inspirational Phrase stickers as the page title.

Work Hard, Play Hard

Geometric Shapes And Masculine Accents

Today's page is a little different from my usual layouts. These photos were taken of my husband in the early 90s back when he was a pro body boarder. Because the photos are so masculine, I tried to reflect that in my page. Most of my pages are pretty girly so I had to conscientiously lay off the flowers and glitter.

I started with basic blue card stock and raided my drawer of paper scraps for paper to make the diamonds along the top. I really had to raid my stash to find things that weren't overly feminine, and even then I wasn't able to completely avoid girly fonts and pastels. I embellished around the matted photos with chipboard cutouts from K & Company and Mixed Media stickers by Momenta. I added a line of polka dot Kimono washi tape along the bottom, and added miscellaneous  brads, tags and buttons.

Today's layout was take from Stuck?! Sketches' January challenge. I knew immediately I wanted to recreate this sketch because I really liked all the diamonds that made the page so unique. I didn't have four small photos so used two larger ones instead.

I found my color palette on Design Seeds. I liked the range of greenish blues and yellows and thought they would compliment all the blue ocean in my photos nicely.

Hearts, Arrows And Owls

I know I have updated for ages and I'm sorry! I guess that's what happens when you get hooked on a new video game. Playstation has been monopolizing my time! Now that I have a few days off for Christmas, I really wanted to commit to a scrap session ad came up with this earth-toned layout.

In this particular sketch, I wasn't worried about matching the color theme to the photo. The result is a little bizarre as the rusts and chartreuse tones are definitely not the expected colors for a pink and blue photo. I don't mind a little color clashing and it definitely makes my photo stand out.

I starting with putting a black matte around my orange paper. Both this and the green damask print came from The Paper Studio's Tattered and Worn Stack. I added a few random strips from my leftover scraps stash to the bottom of my green paper. I embellished with buttons, tags, studs and die cuts from Kaiser Crafts' Scrap Yard collection. I also used stickers by Simple Stories and Me & My Big Ideas.

This sketch was done for Color, Story, Inspiration's 244th case file. I like the non traditional take on red and green holiday colors.

It's been so long since I've updated. It feel good to be scrapping again. Today's page once again features my kitty Jupiter who is cute as she is scrappy. She is definitely one of those cats who will be purring one moment, and trying to bite the next. I love her to death but sometimes I think she's out to get me!

I started with plain white card stock and raided my stash of paper scraps for patterns matching the chosen color palette. I paid those papers with the black and white heart print from The Paper Studio's Mint to be Fab stack and blue and gold polka dot paper by Echo Park Paper Company.

Earth Tones With A Pastel Pop

Hi scrappers! I bring you anther quick post with a page featuring my fluffy kitty Europa. This photo really captures her quirky personality and cuddly nature. It's so funny how expressive she can be times and how well she can communicate her moods.

I started with basic white paper and matted it with a cool toned brown cardstock from The Paper Studio's Affinity Textured Cardstock stack. I then matted by photo on muted red cardstock and used a strip of earth toned patterned paper from The Paper Studio's Affinity stack. I added pale lavender paper as an interesting accent along with some other pastel embellishments to counteract the darker focus paper. The scalloped cloud sticker is from Mambi's Kid's Stuff collection. Wooden buttons from Shimelle's Go Now collection and cat themed die cuts from Roxie and Friends were also used.

This page was done for only one challenge this time. Stuck?! Sketches had a wonderful layout for this July challenge and I really love how it works with my photo. I stayed fairly true to the original sketch, right down to the scalloped embellishment on the right, but I used a much larger photo and added some more tags.

Beaches And Pastels

I love summer. I love the heat and the sunscreen and ice cream. Most of all, I love the beaches! These images were taken by my husband at Laguna Beach. I really like them because they are not the typical beach photos with swimsuits and sand. It was late in the day and I was wearing some weird leggings. The light was just right and my husband took some long exposures, resulting in some unique Summer photos.

I started with perfect paper from Craft Smith's Summer Dream pad. Not only is this paperthe perfect color and matches the theme, it even has an appropriate title built right in!  I then matted it on solid pink paper and added embellishments like lace, mini tags, star brads and paper scraps.

The layout for this page comes from Stuck?! Sketches' July challenge. It really was the perfect sketch for the photos that I have and finding paper with a title corresponding to the size and placement in thee sketch was too perfect!

Lastly, I participated in Scrap Our Stash's July tic-tac-toe challenge and chose the squares "red white and blue," "stars" and "tags." It was fun taking the 4th of July themed challenge and putting a spin on it. It's still Summery, but not at all a portrayal of a patritic holiday.

Earth Laughs In Flowers

Flowers, Foxes And Patterned Papers

Does anybody else save every little paper scrap, sticker or odds and ends no matter how weird in the event it will be perfect for a scrapbook page? I have a fantastic twenty drawer apothecary that I store everything from sequins to buttons to embroidery floss in so it is relatively organized. Some of this stuff I've had for years, maybe even a decade, but even the strangest stuff seems to find its way onto pages.

That was the case for this page. The title quote by poet Ralph Waldo Emerson was a left over paper scrap that I had hung onto for ages and it finally found a home as the perfect title for a page full of flowers. Even the sticker featuring a nature quote (also by Emerson,) became the perfect journal block and was something I had stashed away a very long time ago.

A leafy green page from The Paper Studio's Tattered and Worn stack was the perfect combination of elegant and distressed and was a great color for the background. The yellow patterned paper matting it is from the same stack. The hydrangea paper, pansy paper an the orange and blue accent papers are all scraps from my stash. The floral prints especially ended up working really well and I'm glad I could prominently feature such pretty paper. Other embellishments include:

The theme and color palette for this page were inspired by this beautiful painting by Michael Sass. I incorporated the color scheme and of course lots of flowers. Doing so qualified my page for the May challenge over at ARTastic Challenge.

The layout was taken from Stuck?! Sketches' May challenge. I followed the original sketch pretty closely this time except for changing where the title and journaling went. I even incorporated a doily, although I had room for only half.

Lastly, I participated in a tic-tac-toe challenge at Scrap Our Stash. I used the left vertical column Journal Card, The Color Yellow and 3+ Patterned Papers.

Butterflies, Blue and Bling

Does anybody have a problem buying things they already have too many of? For me it's books. I have an entire bookcase full, all organized by color, and while I am constantly reading them and passing the old ones on to friends or thrift shops, I keep buying them faster than I can read them. Having a dollar book store in town makes it so easy to buy ten books at a time!

But in between all the reading and recently changing jobs, I managed to get a scrapbook page done and complete a couple of challenges in the process.

This iphone selfie was taken about a year ago at the annual Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival. I started with some blue-gray card stock from The Paper Studio's Affinity textured card stock stack. I used blue patterned paper from The Paper Studio's Affinity stack as well as some left over paper scraps that matched the color palette cut up into smaller pieces around the photo. Fabric flowers, Paper Pizazz Vellum cutouts, Momenta Mixed Media Stickers and Tim Holtz Idea-ology stickers all made up embellishment details. I used Heidi Swapp glitter stickers for the title.

The layout for this page is from Creative Scrappers' #306 sketch. Instead of six big rectangles, a did a bunch a of smaller ones around my photo.

This page was also done for Color Story Inspiration's 230th Case File.

Fuzzy Family

Fabric Flowers, Wood Grain And Earth Tones

Sorry for being MIA lately. I was spending some time on my Etsy shop which is now finally open! When I'm not making scrapbook pages, I make homemade bath bombs without artificial additives. You can check out my shop here at The Bubble Company.

This post features yet another photo of my lovely kitty Europa. She's a Turkish Angora mix that we found up for adoption at our local Petsmart. We have no idea what her life was like before we got her, but her life now pretty much consists of sleeping, eating, cuddling, and being exceptionally fluffy.

I started with various colors of acrylic paints that were watered down to give a watercolor effect on my basic white background. A floral and wood grain print from My Mind's Eye's Bramble Rose collection made for the perfect accent. Amy Tangerine stickers by American Crafts was used for the title and Bo Bunny Brads made perfect accents for fabric flowers. Prima Marketing's paper flowers made for a nice understated embellishment.

This page was done for the April challenge at Color, Stories, Inspiration. The inspiration photo practically begged for a cat themed layout and I loved the warm autumn color scheme. I kept my layout similar to the one provided except for switching around the squares to better accommodate the watercolor design I had made.

Bright Colors

Whimsical Prints and Floral Themes

These photos were taken nearly a year ago during last year's spring bloom. I based my palette around the bright yellow of the mustard flowers in the photos.

I started with a piece of green patterned paper from Heartfelt Creation's Sugar Hollow collection. I layered numerous other squares of patterned paper and vellum in green, blue and yellow to set the foundation for my photos. I cut each photo down to 3.5 inches square and mounted them on card stock from Recollection's Blue Ombre pack and neon yellow grid printed paper from Prima Marketing's Rock Out pad. Most of the embellishments used are from My Mind's Eye Hello Gorgeous Mixed Bag. The colors were so perfect for this page!

The layout used is from Creative Scrapper's March Sketch. Once again it pushed me to use more then one or two photos.

Last of all, Lasting Memories' March challenge inspired e to use at least five different patterned papers. I thought the final result might be chaotic but keeping everything in a yellow, green or blue color family kept the page harmonious.

Sometimes I wish I had more diverse photos besides cats, selfies and tropical vacation photos. But since I don't, here's another page full of photos taken in Oahu , Hawaii.

This was another page where I kind of winged it on the color palette. I just picked up the Authentique Utopia Collection paper pad which is perfect for all those tropical photos I have. All the papers have a fun vintage Hawaii vibe which is really unique. I used a few of these prints a well as other left over paper scraps to make multiple photo mats. I edged one side of each mat with Fiskars Paper Edger Scissors for some added interest. 

I mounted the photos on paper from Crate Paper Maggie Holmes Vellum paper pad and embellished with items from My Mind's Eye My Story Mixed Bag, Flea Market Fancy Gold Camera Paperclips, Kimono Washi Tape (love the flamingos!) and Jolee's Boutique flip flops. I threw in some coral colored doilies too.

This page was done for the March Scrap Our Stash tic tac toe challenge. While the challenge was St. Patrick's inspired and my final page was definitely not, I was still able to use it as a source of inspiration. I chose "mini alphas," "gold" and "washi tape." The gray and pink alpha stickers are Hazel & Ruby's Gone Typo Bitter Banner Alpha stickers.

This page's sketch came from Stuck?! Sketches March challenge. I downplayed the circular element and focused on the square shapes. I really liked what Kelly did with the sketch and was inspired to do something similar.
